FERNDALE'S EFFORT TO PRESERVE AMERICA THROUGH WAYFINDING & CULTURAL TOURISM
Project Email: Ferndale@thelakotagroup.com
The Ferndale DDA and City of Ferndale has eagerly launched its Ferndale Wayfinding & Cultural Tourism Program. Ferndale is a Preserve America community, and received a grant to implement a wayfinding system and cultural/heritage tourism marketing effort for Downtown Ferndale and its four neighborhood quadrants that surround the downtown area. The wayfinding system will help direct people to the downtown, to key community locations, its cultural assets and heritage information, while improving our tourism promotions. The Lakota Group in conjunction with Quill Communications and Kidorf Preservation Consulting have been hired to lead our community in this process and develop the wayfinding and cultural tourism plan and products.
An aggressive schedule has been set in order to implement the first phase of wayfinding installation by August of 2010. The first community workshop was held October 14 & 15, 2009, which kicked off the information gathering of both historical and current-day cultural assets, folklore, signage analysis and needs of the community. A survey will be available online shortly so that residents, business owners and consumers alike can contribute additional information and ideas.
A series of community workshops were also held to help the community follow the progress of the project and garner input at various stages of the project. To see the draft plan follow this link.
