Downtown Ferndale continues to exceed expectations, and maintains the economic vitality of the district by registering more than $7.6 million in private and public sector investments and adding 262 net new jobs to its downtown workforce in 2014. District statistics are tracked and reported quarterly by the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority.
Downtown Ferndale saw immense change in 2014 with the transformation and renovation of both buildings and streets. Some successful changes include the completion of East Nine Mile Road Water Main work this past December leading way to multi-modal improvements in the spring of 2015, as well as the City of Ferndale’s public investment in renovating the Ferndale Police Department and 43rd District Court House.
Downtown Ferndale welcomed 18 new businesses and saw 16,000 square feet of new commercial space added, now home to places like The Rocket and Dickey’s BBQ. Growth at the west and east ends of Nine Mile also occurred including the addition of Biggby Coffee and the expansion of Go Comedy! Improv Theater. New business such as M-Brew also contributed to this growth and continuity of the district with the transformation of a 6,500 square feet former VFW hall into a laid-back, cottage-feel Michigan-centric food, beer and coffee brew restaurant on Vester Street. Other business expansions included Greenleaf Bodyworks and The Fly Trap.
The 20 events throughout the year helped draw in significant crowds, including: Small Business Saturday, Holiday Ice Festival, Art of the Cocktail, Ferndale Pride, DIY Street Fair & Funky Ferndale Art Fair, and many more. Outside of events, Downtown Ferndale continued to promote and advertise across all the media including print, radio and billboard, as well as on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Among the 18 new businesses that opened and two relocations within the district in 2014:
La Vida Spa
PakMail (Moved next door)
Elegance by Design
Fern & Dales
The Ferndale DDA manages and markets Downtown Ferndale, a district of approximately 350 businesses located over 3.9 linear miles, intersecting at the iconic Woodward Avenue & Nine Mile Rd.
